Kids learn through play – Educational toys
Truth be told – so do adults! What better way to learn than to tackle hands on tasks and actually learn new skills, rather than just reading up on it and then forgetting it a few days, or even hours, later. This blog has a few other posts related to the “learning through play” theme – here is the first in a series of posts about educational toys.
The series will take a look at various educational toys that are available in South Africa. These include simple things like Six Bricks (educational exercises to facilitate and advance early childhood development using just 6 differently coloured Duplo blocks) to X-in-A-box and Lego Robotics.
So let’s dive in to the Jimu range from UBTECH Robotics.
Inspire enquiring minds with Jimu
A year after unleashing exciting robotic innovations from UBTECH Robotics in South Africa for the first time, Gammatek presents an extended range of Jimu robots for young engineers to bring to life. Gammatek is a leading distributor of technologies in South Africa.
The Jimu Robots are interactive robotic building block systems that let kids (of all ages – me included) easily build, programme and share their robot creations. The Jimu cast of educational toys (robots) are Astrobot, Tankbot, Jimu Explorer and the Jimu Mini Kit.
“The response to UBTECH’s robotic innovations has been overwhelming and we are excited to introduce an extended range of Jimu robots to inspire…” – Zev Cherniak
“The response to UBTECH’s robotic innovations has been overwhelming and we are excited to introduce an extended range of Jimu robots to inspire the imaginations of aspiring young engineers. These interactive robot building kits go beyond pure play and also challenge our perception of educational toys. While stimulating creativity and imagination, UBTECH robotic building kits encourage critical thinking, problem solving, three dimensional engineering and collaboration,” says Gammatek’s Zev Cherniak.
Jimu Robot Kits utilize unique snap together, interlocking parts and connectors which allow you to build your own robots. Smooth motion robotic servo motors allow the robot to reproduce movements programmed via the easy to use Jimu app, available on iOS and Android.
The Astrobot kit
In the Astrobot kit, there is everything you need to build three, amazing robots or build your very own Jimu Robot creation. Learn hands-on engineering by programming Astrobot to navigate obstacles, pick-up objects, control light and sound effects, show emotions, and more using Blockly code.
Astrobot is programmed by creating entirely new, custom actions with the PRP (Pose, Record, Play) function. It has FIVE robotic servo motors to reproduce life like movements.
The kit includes:
- 371 snap-together parts
- 1 infrared sensor
- 1 speaker
- 2 LEDs
- 5 servo motors
- power adapter and quick start guide are also included
The Jimu Tankbot
The Jimu TankBot Kit has got what it takes to keep your creativity rolling!
This kit includes:
- heavy duty treads
- an infrared sensor
- grab-and-lift technology to build TankBot with
- 190 snap-together parts
- 6 smooth motion robotic servo motors
- power adapter, and quick start guide
You can even build very own Tankbot creation. Engage in hands-on STEM learning by programming JIMU robots using Blockly code or with the PRP (Pose, Record, Play) function.
The Jimu Explorer Kit
The Jimu Explorer Kit includes all the parts you need to build any of six unique animal-inspired robots – or your own designs. You will quickly learn to programme your robots to walk, dance and more using Blockly code or with the PRP (Pose, Record, Play) function.
The kit includes:
- 372 snap-together parts
- 7 smooth motion robotic servo motors
- 1 main control box
- 1 lithium-ion battery
- power adapter, and quick start guide.
The Jimu Mini Kit
The Jimu Mini Kit is the ideal start kit for anyone keen to build and programme their own robots. This kit includes everything you need to create three animal-like robots. There are easy-to-follow 3D illustrated building instructions and pre-programmed actions for you to select from. However, you can also programme your own functions.
